No, I have stuck with the updated hub complete as it's not that expensive and has proven reliable for me, engineers designed it so that will do. I've done 166000kms and have never had a failure there, just replace as a matter of maintenance.

If you leave the outer bearing grease seal intact how will you get grease past that to the inner ones?

So I was just reading this thread I must have missed the part about upgraded hubs all those years ago, my vin starts at 428 so was I supposed to get the upgraded hub ?I have 78000k on her now bearings feel fine no noises or anything from rear wheel. would Triumph have changed my hub without telling me on one of the very rare times I took it in to them,(last time was the alarm under warranty) about 2016 and if they did not should I be concerned. the back wheel only ever comes off at tyre changes and I always ask the guys to check the bearings. I can change them myself if needed. but what exactly fails in the original Hubs ?

The part about the updated hub assembly was a Service Bulletin from Triumph concerning the early bikes: this is what I wrote in July of 2015 when we had a thread going about the rear wheel bearings:

Look in my Album, there is a Triumph Technical News Bulletin outlining one of the issues that they had with the Drive Pulley and bearing. The Dealer told me that the Factory was subsidizing the cost because it was a known problem and they just kept the lower price on the new assembly instead of dealing with it.

I had mine replaced and only had to pay for the parts, not the install due to the bulletin. I wish I had known that they were only going to replace the right side bearing, I would have paid extra to have the left one replaced also so they would have both been new..

the seals are easily removed and replaced. take them out, force in the grease, put them back.

I have done this conversion several years ago when Matt conceived the design. When I recently put the avons on I rebuilt the rear and the drive pulley ( the belt would not stay consistant) thinking the bearings were out of tolerance. To my surprise the bearings were in good shape but they were changed out. I like this set up and sticking with it . What I found out about belt was at least on my bike was the orientation of the axle, it only goes in two ways, let's say 0 and 180 degrees when looking at the LHS at the adjuster.

Yep realise that, I thought it was being done with the wheel on when doing a belt adjustment, obviously it's when the wheel is off. (I missed the tyre changing bit in your post)

Mate I don't think it was a recall, just a service bulletin, so it would not have been replaced free.. If you are concerned, the whole assembly last time I bought one it was around $180. The needle roller bearing design was improved. My original didn't fail, I just replaced it as a matter of preventative maintenance, the current (2nd) one is doing fine, bike is at 166000kms at present.

I think the (upgraded) needle bearings add flexibility to the drivetrain, absorb more shock than ball bearings imo. That said either way is roadworthy

Hey Mike, a bit confused about this. My serial number is 526386. Does that suggest I have the update?

There might be an update over this.
